There’s just something about the mountains. The fresh air, the natural beauty and the sounds that you just don’t get to take in when you’re in the city. As an absolute mountain lover, I was surprised with a weekend away at Lake Naverone. A natural retreat, just 2 hours drive from Durban, in a valley among the foothills of the Southern Drakensberg.
Staying at Lake Naverone
My ideal weekend includes a lot of time stopping and just being…Being apart of the surroundings and giving full hearted attention to things that bring joy. After a busy work filled week, this is a way we choose to recharge. At this location I was able to do just that and more. The little cottage we stayed in could host up to 8 people comfortably and had everything one would need for a relaxed, self catered getaway. The kitchen was equipped with all your basic utensils, two seperate bathrooms, dining room, undercover veranda, massive fireplace for those chilly evenings and your own private jetty to paddle out on the trout dam. And for a touch of luxury, a daily cleaning service would come in to make the beds and do dishes whilst we headed out on our days adventure
What We Got Up To
The lake and surrounding scenery, provided amazing options for us to soak up outdoor activities such as trout fishing (river and lake), boating, hiking, mountain biking, horse riding, birding and photography. Although there was a light on and off rain throughout the the weekend there was still so much to do. We chose to spend a lot of time on the water, just paddling, fishing and absorbing the stillness of the beautiful environment that surrounded us. Lake Naverone offers a lot of activities but if you feel like adventuring out of the estate there are hotels close by with restaurants, golf courses and spas. If you follow my social media accounts (@smallthingsthatcount) you will know how much I love getting experimental in the kitchen. It’s a sort of therapeutic thing. As this weekend away was self catering, it was a priority to head to the food markets to get fresh produce for us to create something for our tastebuds that we could associate with the mountains. ie. comfort food and Hot chocolate was a must!
Overall we had the most relaxing weekend at Lake Naverone and will go back there many a time over. It’s a place where you can fill your days with all things calming and bring yourself to a state of bliss.
